Race on Moscow Garden Ring was first held in 1920 as a competition for Moscow citizens, but very quickly gained popularity with participants from different cities and became one of the most interesting events in cycling sport.
In different years the race around the center of the Russian capital gathered over 1000 participants. To take part, participants had to go through tough selection.
To understand the level of importantce of the race one can refer to the names of judges, where one can find names of generals and marshals of USSR, such as Bogdanov, Budenny, Kashuba, Rotmistrow and others. The race was covered in detail in the «Red Sport» newspaper.
The winners of the race were famous Russian athletes: Nicolay Denisov, Pavel Mironov, Igor Ippolitov, Vasili Melnikov, Veniamin Bataen, Vsevolod Dairedjiev, olympics champion Victor Kapitonov, champions of the world and Russia — Guainan Saidhudjin, Anatoli Cherepovich, Rostislav Chizhicov, Evgeny Klevtsov, Fedor Tarachkov.
The race was not stopped even in the years of World War II, the best cyclists of USSR were riding around the Garden Ring demonstrating courage, strength of spirit, patriotism and love to their motherland.
